What outplacement actually is
Outplacement is a company-sponsored service that provides departing employees with dedicated job search support. Instead of leaving employees to find their next role on their own, the company covers the cost of an expert team that works directly with each employee - sourcing roles, rewriting their resume, reaching out to hiring managers, and coaching them through every step of the search.
Second Ladder handles the full job search - not career coaching, not generic webinars, not a portal full of PDF resources. We find real roles, submit real applications, and get real responses.
Why companies choose outplacement
How a company treats employees on the way out says more about the culture than almost any other moment. Employees who receive real support land faster and leave with a positive impression - which directly affects how current employees view the company and how the brand appears to future candidates and customers.
Our process, from request to placement
Step 1: Program setup. You share the employee list and timeline. We scope the program, confirm pricing, and set up.
Step 2: Employee matching. Within 48 hours, each employee is matched to a dedicated Second Ladder advisor based on their background, target roles, and industry.
Step 3: The search. The advisor takes over the search completely - sourcing roles, rewriting the resume and LinkedIn, submitting applications, reaching out to hiring managers, running interview prep, and managing offers.
Step 4: Reporting. You receive weekly updates plus a summary report at 30, 60, and 90 days showing where each employee stands in their search.
Step 5: Placement and close. When an employee accepts a role, we confirm placement and close out their file. The program continues for employees still in search until the agreed program period ends.
Step 6: Full pipeline management. We track every role, response, and interview so nothing slips.
Step 7: Interview and offer support. We prep you for every round and help you negotiate the offer.
Companies of any size going through a reduction in force, restructure, or individual terminations who want to take care of their people and protect their brand. Programs are priced per employee with no minimum commitment.
Senior professionals (Director, VP, Head of, or equivalent) in strategy, operations, product, corporate development, and similar functions, earning roughly $130K to $500K, who are short on time or tired of a search that isn’t moving. It is not built for entry-level roles or quick template fixes.
Frequenly asked questions
How quickly can we enroll employees after a layoff?
We can begin onboarding employees within 48 hours of receiving your list. For large reductions in force, we work in cohorts to ensure everyone gets immediate attention from a dedicated advisor.
How many employees can be enrolled at once?
There is no upper limit. We scale our advisor team to the size of the program. Whether you have 3 employees or 300, every person gets a dedicated one-on-one advisor - not a shared resource or a group session.
What happens if an employee does not find a role within the program period?
We build realistic timelines into the program scope from the start. If an employee is still actively searching near the program end, we discuss extension options. We are invested in outcomes, not just program completion.
Do we get updates on each employee’s progress?
Yes. You receive weekly status updates and formal summary reports at 30, 60, and 90 days showing application volume, interview activity, and placement status for each enrolled employee. Reporting respects employee privacy and focuses on aggregate progress.
Is this done-for-them or do employees have to do the work?
This is a done-for-them service. The advisor handles sourcing, applying, outreach, and pipeline management. The employee approves roles, shows up to interviews, and accepts the offer. That is the split - we do the work, they do the conversations.
How is this different from career coaching or resume services?
Career coaching and resume writing are tools. Outplacement is a managed job search. We do not advise employees on how to search - we run the search for them. That is the fundamental difference: your employees get placements, not advice.
Ready to support your employees through their transition?
How a company exits people matters. It shapes how current employees feel, how the brand is perceived, and how quickly your departing team members land. We handle the search end to end so your people move forward fast and your company comes out of the process with its reputation intact.
The next step is a short call. We will talk through your timeline, employee count, and the level of support that makes sense.
